Top Things to Do in Sousa-Cabarete Area. Dr. Jazz’s Fusion Connection Review

Undoubtedly, live music is one of the most memorable things to do in Sosua-Cabarete area. Saturday night’s concert at The Beach Club was no exception. Some music events at the Beach Club are spontanteous–but this live event was no impromtu jam session. Yet, don’t get me wrong–jam sessions are a blast. However, this band was tight, together, and powerful. And, their name–Fusion Connection–from Haiti, complements of The Beach Club in Seahorse Ranch.

The set featured the sultry, sassy, sophisticated vocals of Alexandra Cherelus. Notably, the songs spanned from the Beatles’ Come Together and Yesterday, Stevie Wonder’s, Isn’t She Lovely? and Grover Washington’s Mr. Magic, as well as Stand by Me, a Ben E. King composition. This tune had also been done by John Lennon and other artists including Prince Royce. On top of that, the musician’s solos were played masterfully within their selections. I savored those exceptional solos as a mini concert performed within the each of the featured solos.

Notably, the song selection matched the diversity of the audience. Therefore, the creative arrangement and treatment of the classic songs made these songs fresh–as if you have not heard them before.

Later, we enjoyed the vocals of house musician Van Avakian who sat in for an impromptu tune. His mellow vocals harmonized with Alexandra to pierce and push the emotion even higher–and elicited the shrill, delighted screams of the younger ladies in the audience.

For me, the evening highlight, was an outstanding drum solo that morphed from crashing crescendos to sobering silence. Also, at times, the cadence became a bit eerie as it slowed and quieted to a point where the rhythm of the percussion rode the sound of the ocean waves in the background. Obviously, the venue of The Beach Club creates magic for the both musicians and the audience.

Indeed, the growing energy between the band and the audience was evident. Consequently, when the band’s drummer invited them to sing along, the audience was eager to join. Therefore, the high energy defined a love affair between the audience and the band.
